How to open a solo 401(k)
To open a solo 401(k), you must first have self-employment income and no full-time employees other than a spouse. You then choose a financial institution or plan provider, complete plan documents, and open the account before your tax filing deadline (including extensions). Once the plan is established, you can make contributions as both the employee and the employer, and invest the funds according to the plan’s options.
Solo 401(k) plans are typically easier to set up than traditional employer plans because they cover only the owner (and possibly a spouse), but you may still need to file IRS Form 5500-EZ once the account balance exceeds certain thresholds.
